What is a neuropsychological assessment?

A neuropsychological assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of cognitive (thinking) abilties. The assessment involves standardised cognitive testing as well as a clinical invterview and review of medical history. The assessment is carried out by a neuropsychologist. Neuropsychologists have expertise in understanding how different neurological (brain) conditions can effect thinking, emotions and behaviour.

The assessment will provide information about cognitive strenghts and weaknesses and results can be used to diagnose various neurological conditions. A detailed report of the assessment results will be provided. Neuropsychologists can also provide tailored interventions to help treat and manage cognitive difficulties.

Why have a neuropsychological assessment?

Neuropsychological assessment can help people with cognitive concerns or suspected cognitive concerns. This includes people with:

  • Dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease)

  • Neurological Conditions (e.g., stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis)

  • Intellectual or developmental disability

  • Psychiatric and Mental Illness (e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, ADHD, depression and anxiety)

  • Drug and Alcohol misuse

Neuropsychological assessment for NDIS Participants

We are able to provide neuropsychological assessments for self-managed and plan-managed NDIS clients. Neuropsychological assessment for NDIS clients can be helpful for the purposes of capacity building.

Neuropsychological assessment can also help establish the presence and extent of a cognitive or intellectual disability for clients seeking to access the NDIS. We will provide a detailed report that can be submitted as part of the NDIS application process.
